The first principle of the Ordinariate is then about Christian unity. St. Basil the Great, the Church’s greatest ecumenist, literally expended his life on the work of building bridges between orthodox brethren who shared a common faith, but who had become separated from one another in a Church badly fragmented by heresy and controversy. He taught that the work of Christian unity requires deliberate and ceaseless effort...St. Basil often talked with yearning about the archaia agape, the ancient love of the apostolic community, so rarely seen in the Church of his day. This love, he taught, is a visible sign that the Holy Spirit is indeed present and active, and it is absolutely essential for the health of the Church.

Diaconal Ordination of Jurgen Liias

Fr. Jonathan Gaspar, Co-Director of Worship and Spiritual Life,
Archdiocese of Boston, in Center, serving as MC, with Bishop
Deeley as he recites the ordination prayer.

from an email from the Ordinariate Community of St. Gregory the Great

About 50 individuals were able to join Deacon Liias for this important event in his and our life; they included members of our community, former parishioners of Jürgens and Fr. Brian Barry of Christ the Redeemer Anglican, pilgrims who had been to the Holy Land with Jürgen, and members of Saint Mary's and Margaret's parishes. For those of you who were unable to be physically present, here are some mementos of the day. The photographs were taken by our brother Steve Hawley — thank you, Steve! for providing these permanent reminders of a beautiful day; also attached are copies of the program and the hymns chosen by Jürgen for the liturgy.
An interesting — perhaps blessed — surprise was discovering that the presiding Bishop, who is Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Boston and therefore "second in command" to the Cardinal, had spent years in Rome working at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; indeed, he had participated in producing the canonical aspects of the erection of the Ordinariates! During his excellent homily he commented on the beauty of seeing the Grace of Pope Benedict's vision working out in the individual, personal, aspect of Jürgen's ordination. The Holy Spirit comtinues to watch over our small flock and send so many Blessings!
Bishop Deeley was exceptionally kind to arrange his schedule such that he could be with us to perform this ordination in time for Deacon Liias to participate in the liturgies of Holy Week. For those in the area, be aware that Deacon Liias will be delivering the homily at the 9:30 Easter Morning Mass at St. Margaret's church (672 Hale St., Beverly Farms).

An Historical Event

Seraiah family with Bishop Pates.

This past weekend an historical event took place in Des Moines, Iowa. (Father) Chori Jonathin Seraiah was ordained to the deaconate. Some might wonder why the significance, well, he is one of the first Americans to enter into Orders under the provisions of Anglicanorum Coetibus. You see, (Father) Seraiah was an Anglican priest.

Reconciliation with Rome is a monumental event, when anyone does it, but there is special significance related to this. The true meaning of religious tolerance and catechesis really shines forth. It has always been the goal for the Church to convert the masses, but it has had varying success over the years and since the Protestant Revolt (some call it a Reformation), it has been very difficult. This is a watershed moment and the reverberations will be heard for all time! A Protestant ecclesial communion is in the process, very real process of reuniting with Holy Mother Church. And (Father) Seraiah couldn't be happier about it...

Andrew Bartus ordained to the diaconate for the Ordinariate in Orange County, CA

The future Blessed John Henry Newman Catholic Church of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter now has a deacon. [On June 9th] at 9:00 a.m. in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles (yes, that one) the Rev Mr Andrew Bartus was ordained to the sacred order of deacons. We weren't allowed to take pictures (we will ignore the fact that we forgot to bring a camera anyway) so we have no pictures to show you. And there doesn't seem to be anything else up on the web to link you to. There is mention on the website of The Tidings of the diaconal ordinations but our deacon isn't mentioned as he was something of a last minute addition and being ordained for another jurisdiction.

Ordination to the diaconate for six Ordinariate clerics

Fr. Scott Hurd, Vicar General of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, writes on Facebook:
I thank God for the last night's ordination as transitional deacon of six oustanding men in Fort Worth. As a former priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth, I give thanks in a particular way for my friends and former colleagues. Of them, Deacon Chuck Hough Sr. was my first boss at St. Andrews', Grand Prairie, and his son was an altar server at Stephanie's and my wedding. And I had great joy assisting Deacon Christopher Stainbrook Stainbrook leading the diocesan youth ministry- which included a fine young woman named Kristina Steenson! And thanks you, Bishop Kevin Vann.

Ordination at Westminster Cathedral

Saturday, May 26, 2012

Seventeen men were ordained Deacon today, 26th May 2012, at Westminster Cathedral for the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham. They were ordained by Bishop Alan Hopes, on behalf of Monsignor Keith Newton. The large congregation included members of their respective Ordinariate Groups and also former parishioners from their time as Anglicans. In the homily, Mgr Andrew Burnham pointed to the candidates' many years of priestly service and the energy, experience and wisdom which they bring to the Catholic Church.
The music included the Mass for five voices by Byrd and motets by Tallis and Victoria. The hymns "Crown him with many crowns" and "Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour" were sung with great zeal, as befits the Anglican patrimony, and Dubois' "Toccata" for organ provided a joyous conclusion to the liturgy.

In the coming days and weeks, they will be ordained to the Priesthood, usually in their local Diocese. Full details are to be found in the Calendar on the website.

Mgr Newton thanked Canon Tuckwell, the Administrator, the staff, servers and choir of the cathedral for their help and support and Bishop Hopes for ordaining these new Deacons.
